What is meditation?

A plain description of the five-minute sitting used here, and what it is for.

Meditation here means something simple: sitting still for a few minutes with the attention gathered on one thing instead of scattered across everything. We begin with five minutes because five minutes is enough to notice a difference and short enough to keep.

The sitting for a newcomer has a plain shape. You settle the body. You let the breath find its own pace and rest the attention on it. When the attention wanders, and it will, you bring it back without a fight. A bell marks the end.

Those who follow Thakur may rest the attention on him instead of the breath. It is optional, and nobody will ask you to do it.

What it is for: a steadier centre to return to during the day. What you notice is yours to find out.

What it is not: it is not the practice given at initiation. That is given person to person and is not described anywhere on this site. The sitting here is open to everyone.
